T&C's 2026 Alaska Trek in the T42

( Posted 260816 ) - Today, on Day 25 of our Trek, we reached "the end of the road".  Not the end of our journey, of course, but the end of the Alaska Highway.

( Posted 2600816 ) - We had scheduled a "housekeeping day" for our time in Tok, and arriving a day ahead of schedule gave us a little more free time to get things done - which ended up being a good thing, since we had an "unexpected surprise" waiting for us.

( Posted 260810 ) - The section of the Alaska Highway between Burwash Landing, YT and Tok, AK is notorious for being in terrible shape and extremely rough on vehicles - pretty much the main reason that folks think twice about trying to drive to Alaska.  Our original plan was to break the drive up across two days, so that Tom didn't have to do a prolonged period of slow, high-stress driving.  We ended up doing it in one, though.

( Posted 260806 ) - It's not often that a trail gets the better of us, but the one we chose in Kluane National Park ended up being a little more than we could handle and we were unable to reach our destination.

( Posted 260727 ) - The recent blog posts have been all about traveling the Alaska Highway, but today we took a 46 km detour off the Alaska Highway in order to visit Carcross - and retrace some of the path from our previous visit to Alaska back in 2011.

( Posted 260717 ) - Saturday was supposed to be a "travel day with some fun stops along the way", but sort of ended up being more of a "travel day with a trio of disappointments" instead.  But that's the way "life on the road" is sometimes!

( Posted 260715 ) - Our quest for our first full day in the Yukon was to hang the sign we had brought with us in the Sign Post Forest in Watson Lake.

( Posted 260712 ) Our final day in British Columbia ended up being a fairly packed one, with lots of animal sightings (Stone's Sheep, two herds of bison, and a bear with her cubs), a visit to a famous hot spring, and a little roadside assistance thrown in.

 ( Posted 260707 ) Wednesday was scheduled to mainly be a travel day, but as usual we broke up the day by making a few stops - and saw some new animals along the way too!

( Posted 260630 ) Tuesday was our first day driving up the Alaska Highway, and it turned out to be a pretty eventful one.

( Posted 260629 ) It's a little odd to think that we're almost two weeks into our trip and we've only just today reached the beginning of the highway to Alaska, but here we are!

( Posted 260628 ) Our next planned stop was in Chetwynd to see some of the chainsaw carvings there.  Chetwynd hosts an International Chainsaw Championship annually, and many of the winners from past years are on display around the town.  The problem was that this year's Championship happened to be this weekend - and we figured that meant crowds, traffic, and probably a lack of availability in the usual boondocking spots in the area since they'd be used by Championship visitors.  Today, Sunday, was the final day of the Championship (with the awards ceremony at 3 p.m.) so we figured we'd play it safe and stay in a boondocking spot 37 km outside of town tonight and then head into Chetwynd tomorrow.  But things didn't go exactly as planned . . .

 ( Posted 260622 ) Saturday was sort of an anti-travel day, where our stopping place for the night was a mere 15 km away from the previous night's.  But along the way, we stopped at a park to see a series of tree carvings.

( Posted 260619 ) Despite a minor change in our travel plans, we still spent the day seeing some of the sights in Quesnel.

( Posted 260618 ) The fact has not escaped us that this is the third blog post in a row to have a waterfall as the cover photo - but we really like visiting waterfalls. 😉

( Posted 260613 ) Almost a week after leaving home, we were finally ready to cross the border into Canada - after a couple of final snags.  Our first day would involve a little driving, a little (Canadian) shopping, and some sightseeing - including the first waterfall of the trip!

( Posted 250611 ) Rather than try to rush to the border when the crossing itself could take an unknown amount of time, we had built an errand and travel day into our schedule.

(Posted 260610) Since we had to drive through Washington on our way to Alaska, we decided to take the opportunity to spend the weekend catching up with some old friends who live there.
